July 2007 Business Name: Shines and Shimmers
What is your business all about?
Like many businesses my business is about life and hope and looks and love... I help people improve their self esteem and confidence by providing a range of aesthetic and wellness services and therapies. What motivated you to start your business?
Throughout all my working life I have been giving all my jobs everything I had. I changed industries and roles deliberately and frequently in order to acquire a wide variety of skills and experiences. Sometimes my efforts were rewarded. Most times - they weren’t. I guess I got sick of working hard to make someone else’s business grow. How did you manage to secure the support and funding to establish your business?
I was preparing for the business venture for some years before it eventuated. A combination of good credit rating, a wonderful relationship with the bank manager and a little equity in my home secured me the loan that I needed to start my business. Did you experience any challenges when setting up your business? If so, what did you learn from them?
Challenges and test were and still are coming up on a daily basis. Some are big and others are smaller. If an issue I am facing is too much to think about I typically try to break it into smaller parts. I then prioritise the parts and deal with each individual one separately. Usually, the last part is like the last piece of the puzzle. What are some of the most valuable lessons you have learned?
I believe that no matter how small or big a task is it needs to be approached seriously and dealt with professionally. High working ethics and one’s own beliefs and morals should never be compromised, no matter what anyone else thinks or says. What have you had to sacrifice and what have you gained from the experience thus far?
The only sacrifice I can think of would be time with my family. It’s always a difficult one, especially with us girls J. However, good time management skills (still working on this one) and common sense make it more manageable. There is always a side of life (family, friends, business, socialising) that suffers more or less. For me, it’s all about priorities on the day. What do you think was important for you to be successful with the business?
Determination and keeping an open mind. Also I could not do this without the support of my husband.
Do you consider your business to be your biggest personal achievement to date?
Although quite often these two cross over, I would probably like to look at my personal achievements separately from my professional ones. I would say my business is my biggest professional achievement. However, long-lasting marriage and an amazing kid as well as spiritual growth and self-development would come under personal achievements. What do you think it takes to be successful?
The three things that helped me most were: having a clear vision, willingness to work hard toward it and being able to let whatever happens be okay. If you had to do it all over again, would you do anything differently?
Absolutely not! I had to go through all the mistakes, drawbacks, successes and victories to accomplish and appreciate what I have today. What advice could you provide for other young people interested in starting their own business?
Well it all starts with a thought, isn’t it? So think and dream about your business no matter how strange it may sound to others. Just be realistic and be prepared to start small. Visualise it and see it clearly. Have it front of you even if your eyes are open. Taste the bitterness of hard work and the sweetness of success before it even happens. Work hard and be prepared to start over if you don’t succeed the first time. So, get up again each time you fall.
