Law Sense Workshops

                                                                           ‘This is an Australian Government
                                                                            funded service under the Building
                                                                         Entrepreneurship in Small Business
                                                                                               Program.’

ENYA, with the support of the AusIndustry, has developed the Law Sense Workshop Series in order to raise business owners’ awareness and understanding of their legal and compliance obligations.

A specific area of concern to ENYA is the fact that many small business operators are not aware or do not fully appreciate their legal and compliance obligations. This lack of knowledge acts as an obstacle in achieving growth in small business.

ENYA realises that young entrepreneurs need assistance, however they are often short of time, and the financial resources to secure it. It is important for young business people to be self-sufficient and this project aims to assist young entrepreneurs with skills development in relation to many of the legal matters they face in business.

This workshop series has been specifically targeted to small business operators and will take participants through a series of modules and activities, building knowledge and skills in relation to these five modules:
  1. Financial Management and the Law.
      • Assist participants to understand the issues surrounding raising capital for their small business and the legal implications of different methods.
      • Provide participants with guidelines on how to raise capital.
      • Take participants through the legal steps involved in debt recovery and teach them to write their own Statement of Claim.
  2. Intellectual Property Management.
      • Build an awareness of what intellectual property is and the importance of protecting the IP in your business.
      • Assist participants to understand the different forms of IP and how to commercialise the IP in their business.
      • Take participants through the steps in writing their own Confidentiality Agreement.
      • Participants are provided with information in relation to avoiding infringing IP rights and the remedies available when a breach occurs.
  3. Employment Law and HRM.
      • Explain the different forms of employment agreements and major obligations between employers and employees.
      • Overview of the most recent changes to the IR system – WorkChoices legislation.
      • Independent contractors vs. employees.
      • Major compliance areas for employers – Workers Compensation, OH&S and Superannuation.
  4. Marketing, e-Business and the Law.
      • Introduce participants to the main legislative provisions governing marketing and e-business practices.
      • Provide an outline of the rights and obligations of people in trade.
  5. Compliance Management and the Law.
      • Assist participants to understand the advantages of having a compliance management plan and learn the elements and strategies for developing such a plan that they can apply in their business.
      • To point out the major areas of compliance that should be covered by a compliance plan and look at the issues that may arise within them and strategies for tackling any compliance issues.
      • Provide participants with an overview of their primary taxation obligations and how to properly manage these to ensure compliance.

Law Sense Workshop Series

ENYA, with the support of AusIndustry, will launch the Law Sense Workshops in Wollongong on 23 March 2007. The program will be delivered in a series of innovative, one day workshops and will tour NSW in 2007 and 2008. Each workshop will offer participants the opportunity to develop their legal and compliance obligations and give their business a competitive advantage.

The workshop series are free and each participant will receive a comprehensive legal advice kit consisting of numerous fact sheets, precedents, and a summary of useful resources to utilise beyond the day of the workshop. These kits will be provided free of charge to all participants to allow for access to vital legal information without the costs normally associated with such a service. Free catering will also be provided on the day.
